Today I got asked by one of our bootcampers about eating to boost your immune system (seeing as she has been hit by one thing after another… cold, tummy bug, mastitis).

I’ve been asked this before so here’s my response…

With regards to eating to boost your immune system there are a few things to consider:

1) Any kind of inflammation (so mastitis definitely counts here!) will be made worse by inflammatory foods. So as rubbish as you might be feeling, don’t go near sugar of any kind, even though it is tempting as a pick me up. If you need to sweeten anything, try a little manuka honey.

2) Anti-inflammatory foods that are worth eating in abundance: Ginger, cinammon, turmeric, chilli – basically most spices are great for this.

3) Water – gallons of it!

4) Bone broth / chicken soup really does help calm the adrenals and help the immune system.

5) And finally I’d recommend magnesium in every form possible to help the body recover – so magnesium rich foods (dark leafy greens are particularly good), magnesium tablets (not oxide), epsom salts baths etc.
