We all know that we should be drinking plenty of water. As an absolute baseline, the standard guideline is to consume 2L daily, but for many people the requirement is a lot more. Fact is, the more body mass you have, the more water you need to drink. Plus you ought to add extra when you’re working out and more still if the temperature is warm.
The biggest problem I come across is that many people simply find water a bit dull. Although I personally love a glass of cold water, I completely understand that this doesn’t float everyone’s boat. So here are three suggestions for making your cold water consumption a little less dull:
1) Herbal iced tea.
Brew a pot of your favourite herbal tea at night. Pour into a jug and leave in the fridge to chill overnight. You can then pour out a glass whenever you require, or decant into a bottle for drinking on the go.
2) Fruity flourish.
Simply fill a jug with water and add some slices of lemon and / or lime. This adds a lovely fresh citrus hint. I also find this works well with slices of apple, or with fresh mint.
3) Cheeky cordial.
Ok, let me clarify this first – YES, cordial does contain sugar and I don’t think that drinking tons of cordial or squash or anything like that is a great plan. However, if you really struggle to keep your fluid intake up, and you’re not a fan of herbal tea, then adding a splash or cordial to a pint of water once a day isn’t the end of the world. NB: A lot of cordials contain aspartame which, quite frankly, is worse than sugar IMHO. So I prefer Bottle Green brands. Their elderflower cordial, for example, is made up of: Sugar, spring water, elderflowers, citric acid. A dash of that won’t kill you.
So yeah, I’m not advocating drinking it by the bucket load, but if it helps you add a pint of water to your daily consumption then so be it 🙂
